Devastating cyclone leaves Gujarat villages wrecked
Survivors returned to homes wiped out as a cyclone plowed through western India killing 415 people and injuring 1,200. In Gujarat’s Kutch district a 12 foot tidal surge flooded coast areas near Kandla wrecking salt works and washing away homes. Rescue efforts drop food packets by helicopter while power shortages hinder water supply and damages reach $284 million.

Scientists identify starlike L dwarfs in Milky Way
Cal Tech astronomers announce a new class of faint cooling gas spheres named L dwarfs. They have surface temps about one third of the sun and masses near a third of it, resembling stars but lacking fusion. Surveying 1 percent of the sky, they estimate L dwarfs could be about half of all nearby stellar points in the Milky Way.

Navy May Fall Short of 1998 Recruiting Target
The Navy may recruit about 48,000 this year, roughly 7,000 fewer than the 55,321 goal for fiscal 1998 ending Sept 30. Adm. Jay Johnson cited a strong economy and weaker recent recruiting pushes as key factors. The Air Force also lagged in February–April but remains on track for its 30,300 goal.
