James Earl Ray and five others escaped Brushy Mountain maximum security prison in a dawn of gunfire during evening recreation. A wounded convict, bank robber Jerry Ward, was hospitalized after being shot while shouting that Ray had escaped. Bloodhounds tracked three escapees as FBI and state officers surged the area near Oak Ridge and Morgan County Tennessee. Ray, already serving 99 years for King's 1968 Memphis murder, had been recaptured or pursued as part of a large manhunt.
A man posing as Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jim Youngblood used the name William J Wood from Toledo. He stayed in Cedar Rapids for four weeks in March and disappeared with 3200 dollars from a Milwaukee discotheque, triggering FBI involvement though no charges were filed locally.
A 17 year old, Craig Haas, can run for mayor after a solicitor general opinion cleared nominating papers. The crucial date is when he would take office after the election, not his voting age. Haas plans to pursue the nomination while pondering high school final year duties.
