Methodist conference merger talks fail to gain support in Iowa
Dr Staats said a merger of the two Iowa conferences lacked sufficient sentiment to proceed this year. Polling showed mixed views among more than 100 ministers and church leaders statewide as the boundary between conferences runs roughly along highway 30 and the Mississippi River. A union would need approvals from both conferences and the North Central Jurisdictional conference, and would create a large Iowa Methodist gathering with over 1300 voting delegates if approved. The South Iowa conference backed a nationwide push to recruit more ministers and called a Des Moines session for October 16 to discuss the ministry’s future.
