Sonora Dodd in Spokane proposed a Father’s Day to honor fathers, aiming for June 6 her dad’s birthday. She advocated naming the day after mothers already celebrated, highlighting her father’s role in raising her and her six brothers after her mother’s death.
Ministers in Spokane could not write sermons by June 6 and selected the third Sunday in June. Congress designated the day as an official holiday in 1971. Mrs Dodd died in 1978 after seeing Father’s Day celebrated many years. The holiday is also observed in Europe Australia Japan Hong Kong and South Africa.
