Two Injured In Cedar Rapids Accidents
Two Cedar Rapids residents were injured in separate incidents on Wednesday. Donald Owen Dietrich, 21, of 1412 First Street SW, received hand injuries from a motorcycle crash on Twelfth Avenue SW near C Street and was treated at Mercy Hospital before being released. He told police he forgot to turn on his gas supply while riding. Dietrich was charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle. Jeffery Carter, 14, of 1220 Lindale Drive, Marion, was treated at St. Luke's for leg and arm abrasions after the bicycle he rode was struck by a car driven by Lori Lyn Nurre, 17, of Robins. Carter was crossing Council Street near Bowman Road NE when the accident occurred. a sight obstruction was noted and a reduced speed limit sign was advised to be placed north of the intersection. No charges were filed.

Complaint Against Phone Firm Dropped in Iowa
DES MOINES UP I The Iowa Commerce Commission dismissed a complaint by Cedar Rapids businessman Arlan Stegan over a burglar alarm service rate increase from $6 to $24 effective January 1. Northwestern Bell argued the higher charge reflected a changed service and central office relocation. The commission ruled the carrier complied with tariff rules.

Former Resident Ronald Sirowy Dies in California
Ronald A. Sirowy 33, a former Cedar Rapids resident, died Monday in San Marcos California in an apparent suicide after mental mood illness. Born November 3 1942 in Cedar Rapids he worked as an appliance and later McGrath's salesman. Surviving are his parents a daughter a son sister brother and grandmother. Services at Brush chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with burial at Czech National. viewing after noon Friday.

Beautifying Park Four Girls Arrested
Four girls aged 12 to 16 were arrested Wednesday evening on malicious damage charges for painting picnic tables and pavilion supports at Cedar Valley park with red paint. They claimed they were beautifying the park. The youths were taken into custody and handed to their parents.

City AFSCME Negotiations Go To Arbitrator
Negotiators for the city and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees union have agreed to submit their collective bargaining case to an arbitrator. The union represents streets department workers and others, while police fire library and transit units have separate bargaining units. No arbitration hearing date is set. After four mediation sessions they skipped fact finding and move to arbitration. The city council recently authorized a one year contract with police officers in the Teamsters union, the first such city agreement.

Youths Charged In Egg Throwing
Four juveniles ages 14 to 17 were arrested and charged with malicious damage after eggs were thrown from a passing car at parked and moving vehicles in the 2100 block of Fifth Avenue SE. At least five cars were hit. eggs were found inside the suspects’ car before they were released to their parents.

Child Dies After Car Train Mishap At Camp Cardinal Road
A Coralville one year old child died Thursday morning when a car was struck by a Rock Island freight train at the Camp Cardinal road crossing. The mother pulled onto tracks and could not clear in time. The child was dead on arrival at University Hospitals. the mother hospitalized. City officials blame lack of crossing guards and signals, noting a prior council approval to install a guard at this crossing. Officials said crossing guards are installed per a set plan and can take months.

Off-Limits Cedar River Zone Proposed by City
Cedar Rapids safety chief Ed Colton proposed a city ordinance creating an off limits stretch on the Cedar river just above the REA dam. The plan would ban boating and swimming from the dam to an upstream overhead cable about 175 feet away, with warning signs to mark the killer dam. The May 20 tragedy where two city firemen died during a rescue drill prompted the proposal, and further training in the area may be halted pending evaluation.
