High school graduation remains high at 90 percent, yet fourth graders and eighth graders show large gaps in reading and math. Preschool participation lags pre pandemic, while teen births fall and child deaths drop. Rising housing costs are middle-income but poverty among children rose 8 percent from 2019 to 2023.
