U N backs Iraq sovereignty in new governance plan

The U N Security Council approved a resolution endorsing transfer of sovereignty to Iraq by end of June. The unanimous vote followed a Franco German compromise and gives Iraqi leaders control over some security forces and sensitive operations while not vetoing major U S led military actions.

Van Buren County Moves From Hand Counts To Ballot Scanners

Van Buren County Iowa will switch from hand counted paper ballots to optical scanners under the Help America Vote Act funding. Auditor Jon P. Finney says the change is mainly mechanical as voters will still mark ballots by hand, preserving the familiar voting style.

The Iowa commemorative quarter debuts September 3 with statewide events after Labor Day. The coin honors Arbor Day themed by Grant Wood and ties activities to school events. Incumbents Dominate Johnson and Linn County Primaries

In Linn County the two top Democrats were Lu Barron with 1 818 votes and Jim Houser with 1 787. In Johnson County Terrence Neuzil led with 5 055 and Pat Harney with 4 620 for three spots. Rod Sullivan narrowly beat Mike O'Donnell 3 189 to 3 057 for the third slot. No Republican opposition yet. Mary Lou Pazour hinted at a petition to reach the general ballot needing 250 signatures.
