U S automakers GM Ford and DaimlerChrysler will fit emergency trunk release mechanisms as standard features this summer or soon after. The move follows a federal safety panel report urging action after 11 children died in trunk entrapments. GM plans its Automatic Trunk Detection and Opener System on 2000 Impalas with full rollout by 2002. Ford and Chrysler also announce trunk escape devices with minimal price impact. The federal panel was created by the NHTSA after last summer’s deaths.
