Extreme weather lashes eastern Iowa as fresh storms bring heavy rainfall. Residents brace for possible flooding while authorities monitor conditions and issue advisories. Rainfall totals mount across counties with potential road closures and power outages reported.
Strong winds hail and heavy rain battered eastern Iowa ripping through La Porte City and a rural area near Hudson. Tornado funnels were sighted with two confirmed on ground. Morley area power lines towers toppled injuring Wyoming and rural grids. Quad City area reports downed trees lines and damaged homes. Crop damage noted amid widespread rain totals up to 5 inches in spots.
A heavy wind and rain storm at Carson’s airport north west of here destroyed one light aircraft owned by Carl Blair of Coggan and damaged another owned by Lee Dix. The Cessna 140 overturned after high winds blew it across the field, while Dix’s plane suffered wing and tail damage after being blown over multiple times. The storm, around 3 p.m. near Troy Mills, interrupted telephone and electrical service and toppled a barn and windmill on nearby farms. Trees fell and hail was reported with about two inches of rain in the area. The Hoffmans near Independence reported a funnel cloud sighting and sought shelter.
Strong winds and heavy rain led to multiple incidents. Two Marshalltown men escaped drowning on Rock Creek lake near Kellogg after their boat capsized. J N Johnson and Dink Abel swam to shore. A Des Moines couple, Otto and Mrs, Anderson, drowned when their boat overturned May 31. In Dubuque a lightning strike damaged a car and injured two passengers while a La Porte City restaurant roof collapsed during a wedding reception.
A tanker and a 60 foot fishing vessel collided about a dozen miles off Cape Cod on Sunday. The Jamestown kept sailing, and its crew of two fought three hours to reach port at Corpus Christi Texas. Fisherman Arthur Duarte reported the incident and said the Jamestown was ordered to file a report there.
The Supreme Court ruled federal tax collectors may seize a widow’s life insurance money to pay the deceased’s tax debts when a valid lien existed before death or state law imposed liability. The ruling extends to beneficiaries beyond widows, with liability limited to the policy’s cash surrender value.
West German customs praise Geisha a trained Spaniel for tracking illicit coffee at the Dutch German border. The dog locates coffee hidden under coal, wrapped in petrol soaked cloths, and aboard Rhine vessels and trains.
Philip Jessen, 10, was trapped for about 2½ hours when a foot was caught under a boulder during a fall at Palisades Interstate Park. A maintenance crew used hydraulic jacks to lift the rock and free him. He was hospitalized for cuts and bruises.
Moscow radio reported the Soviet vessel Ivan Neskarin departed for Tunisia carrying food for Algerian refugees. The report dated Monday did not specify the voyage destination beyond Tunisia.
Joseph Crowley of New Haven faces an indictment in Tokyo district court for causing the death of his brother in law T. A. D. Jones Jr. The charge cites inflicting bodily injuries resulting in death after excessive drinking. Jones, 45, headed a New Haven fuel oil firm. Crowley is his sister’s husband and vice president of the firm.
Gen. de Gaulle announced a Corsica prefect to reassert Paris authority and filled the cabinet with four middle-rank ministers and one career civil servant. Information Minister Malraux reported the changes after a brief 45 minute meeting amid talks with the U.S. ambassador and Tunisia negotiations.
Leroy Reed, 30, was rescued off shore after leg cramps sent him under at Lake Lav. Boatmen and responders revived him with artificial respiration and oxygen. Reed regained consciousness about an hour later. He described a calm, drifting sensation as the near-drowning occurred while his wife and relatives watched.
Daniel Tille, 24, a ski instructor, sacrificed himself to save his fiancée Maryse Bleul, 21, as she slipped down a 900 foot slope. Both were rescued by helicopter. Tille died later at a hospital, Bleul was only slightly hurt.
Midland Construction Company won the Cedar Rapids public paving contract at 489 561 62 dollars, beating Hennessey Brothers Inc at 547 183 01, both far below the 570 935 80 estimate. City officials noted the low prices reflect eager bidding by local firms on the 28 site project.
Berlin AP report says Russia refused to take responsibility for nine U S army men captured after a East German helicopter force landing near Zwickau. Russia claims East Germany has jurisdiction over prisoners and aircraft, while the U S and allies dispute Berlin's status. The note underscores a widening diplomatic row as the U S does not recognize the East German regime.
A 43 year old man, Donald Mark, a Grand Canyon motel clerk, fell hundreds of feet from the south rim in a suspected accident as bystanders watched in horror. National Park official John McLaughlin said Mark appeared to be playfully jumping between stones when he slipped and fell.

Townsend says the group is the largest elderly organization and a political pressure group pushing social security reforms.
