Mississippi law requires cord blood samples from young mothers
Mississippi will require doctors to collect umbilical cord blood from babies born to mothers 16 or younger when the father is 21 or older or paternity is in question. Samples go to the state examiner for testing in possible statutory rape cases but are not automatically entered into the DNA database. The measure, effective July 1, aims to curb teenage pregnancy and identify offenders, amid privacy and legality concerns.
