Iowa faces stigma as AIDS in 2004 mirrors early cancer fears. The state has 1,505 AIDS diagnoses since 1984 and 457 HIV without AIDS. Polk County leads with 294 cases. Ryan White CARE funds about 2.05 million to cover medical bills, with UI and ICARE clinics relying on federal support for treatment and personnel.
Local providers ICARE and Rapids AIDS Project coordinate Ryan White funds to aid housing and living needs. Patricia Young of the Iowa Department of Public Health says four consortia work well, but future state funding remains uncertain beyond federal support. She emphasizes ongoing disease control, prevention, and quality care.
