President Bush returns to central Iowa for the tax cut bill campaign stop. The effort centers on the $1.35 trillion package highlighted during his campaign in the state.
Timothy McVeigh ends all legal appeals after a 10th Circuit ruling finds his lawyers failed to show substantial grounds to halt his death sentence. He will be executed by lethal injection in Terre Haute, Indiana, next week for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.
Marion City Council unanimously rejects Terry Bjornsen's 39 million wilderness resort along Highway 100 ending the project over a 40 year hotel tax rebate interpretation. Mayor Vic Klopfenstein says he cannot support if the period changes. Bjornsen calls timing poor and questions why doubts weren’t raised earlier.
The IRS releases the schedule for advance payment checks under the 2001 tax relief act. Payments are determined by the last two digits of the taxpayer's Social Security number with the first listed spouse’s SSN used for married couples filing jointly.
In Cedar Rapids volunteers and artists install 29 six foot tall Overalls All Over statues in downtown locations as part of an American Gothic public art event sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Renaissance Group. The display begins with a Greene Square Park unveiling and will run through the fall ending with auctions of some pieces.
The Gazette reveals 28 statues on display downtown with a 10 am unveiling, followed by remaining pieces at 10 30 am. One statue will be permanently shown at The Eastern Iowa Airport and a 30th is at Chicago Lincoln Park Zoo with other urban sculptures nationwide.
The U S government will mail about 974000 advance payment checks to Iowans starting July 23 under the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Act of 2001. Letters explain each taxpayer's entitlement. payments range up to 600 dollars with an average around 437. Eligibility depends on tax liability and filing status. Some receive credits on their 2001 return while others get checks.
