A barn west of the Cedar River bridge on Highway 30 burned early Tuesday. Ely fire crews arrived at 11:45 p.m. and left about 1:20 a.m. The barn owned by Milo Andrle was abandoned as part of the land was DOT property. Several smaller outbuildings were saved.

Marion Resident Dies in Collision and Stranger Death
Howard Wittenberg 60 of 711 Third Avenue Marion dies at a local hospital after a fall in two incidents Monday night. In one event 3 year old Nicholas Long of 700 Thirty-fifth Street Marion was injured when struck by a car driven by Gerald Lee Kula 26 of the Marion Mobile Home Court. The child was treated at Mercy Hospital for contusions and abrasions and released. No charges were filed. Memorial services for Howard R Wittenberg are set for Turner Chapel East Friday at 10:30 a.m. Burial Oak Shade cemetery visitation after 1 Wednesday until 10 a.m. Friday.

William Ham reported a break in at Fauconnier Manufacturing Co in Central City with extensive damage and theft of three micrometers and tools worth 255 dollars. Damage to company property estimated at 419 dollars and vending machines damaged to 800 dollars. Vernon Dice said his rural Palo residence was entered and a 125 dollar camera and a 75 dollar antique wash bowl and pitcher stolen. Howard J. Albin reported 400 dollars in tools and 80 dollars in cash stolen from Hawk Eye service station in Central City. Joe Kwapil Jr reported a 375 dollar boat motor stolen from his rural Palo residence.

Public Works Director Jon Janda told the city council there may be sufficient funds left in the street improvement fund to complete four-lane pavement on Forty-second street NE east of Twin Pines. Replacing the two lane asphalt road with concrete paving is part of this summer's paving program. Janda estimated the cost to construct Thirteenth street SE between Second and Third avenues at just over $30,000. Plans and specifications will be on file Wednesday. Bids for the Thirteenth street work will be opened June 23.
