Former USC All American Takes Life

Former USC All American Bruce Gardner a 1960 USC physical education graduate and Dodgers minor league pitcher was found dead on Bovard Field at USC. Police say apparent self inflicted death pending coroner report. Gardner was 32, posted an 18 2 season in 1960 and played four years with the Dodgers organization before injuries ended his career.

Umpire Satisfactory After Being Struck

In Memphis Tennessee an umpire was in satisfactory condition at a hospital after being struck in the throat by a foul ball. Paul Maltby, 29, of Sacramento California, was hit during the second inning of the second game of a doubleheader between Jacksonville and Memphis.

Alvarez Regains Consciousness After Indy Pace Car Crash

Dr Vicente Alvarez of Buenos Aires regained consciousness in Indianapolis and remains in critical condition after the pace car crash at the May 29 Indianapolis 500. Medical director Dr Thomas Hanna said he is definitely improved and the recovery outlook is hopeful. Alvarez, a surgeon, had attended the race as a representative of Argentine magazines since 1958 and suffered a fractured skull and other injuries when the pace car hit a photographers grandstand.
