Four Die After Car Is Split By Train At Iowa Crossing

A mother and three teenage daughters were killed when their car was torn in half by a Burlington Northern passenger train at a rural Council Bluffs crossing two miles south of highway 275. The Ak Sar Ben Zephyr from Chicago to Lincoln dragged the vehicle about three quarters of a mile. engineer Norman Ridinger said the train was traveling about 75 mph and the car failed to stop at the stop sign. Linda Johnston 19, Sandra 16 and Patricia 14 were among the victims. Mrs. John B. Johnston and a son were away on a fishing trip in Nebraska. Linda was to be married July 11. the three girls attended Lewis Central High School.
