Friday’s checks totaled 309 with 95 passing original checks.
Dvorak told officers Cooper stood in a barn door with a shotgun and a struggle followed when the weapon fired into the air. The gun was borrowed from Jake Furler after Cooper claimed to shoot a horse. Deputies and Sheriff Smith responded Wednesday morning to the farm near Marion where Cooper was believed barricaded.
Edward Biasi 24, chief yeoman in the personnel department at the Great Lakes naval training station, died from injuries after an automobile crash on a highway into Dubuque. Sheriff reports he apparently fell asleep or lost control, the car striking a cement railing then a bluff and ejecting him. Passersby brought him to Mercy hospital.
Marilou Maddox a 19 year old University of Iowa junior from Evansville Indiana pled guilty to forgery in district court. She was arrested in March on checks totaling 65 dollars in six business places in Iowa City.
A joint senate house conference committee inserted a prohibition on federal employees striking or joining unions asserting the right to strike against the government into the agriculture department's 1947 appropriation bill.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities urged vigilance against communism in a 73 page report. It called on individuals unions and government to root out communist influence and criticized a War Department orientation pamphlet No 64 from March 24 1945 as a "dirty blot" on army history.
Keokuk Iowa voters narrowly defeated a daylight saving time measure after labor groups and residents protested. The council had passed the ordinance to move clocks ahead an hour, but it was rejected Friday amid opposition from labor leaders and petitions. Mayor John Bierman said he would seek a public vote at the November general election.
Prof Rollin M Perkins of the University of Iowa College of Law will resign from Iowa after 30 years and start August 1 as the Frank C Rand professor of law at Vanderbilt. He will teach criminal law and procedure, bills and notes, suretyship and parts of commercial law.
A Cedar Rapids all veterans housing committee will open a converted surplus grain bin at 821 Fourteenth Street NE for public inspection Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The 14 by 24 foot house includes a living room kitchen bathroom mezzanine bedroom closet and large overhead storage. Committee chairman Howard McLaughlin says the project tests converting grain bins into livable units and the group may purchase additional bins to sell at cost for veterans on nearby lots.
The OPA petitions Hardin county district court to enjoin C. W. Heusing doing business as the Union market at Union from slaughtering more livestock than allowed for a class two slaughterer under the second war powers act. It also seeks costs against the defendant.
W C Carpenter was elected president of the Iowa Association of Small Loan Companies at a Des Moines meeting. The Townsend Victory club eight will hold a Sunday picnic supper at 6 p.m. A social hour and brief business meeting follow, bring a covered dish. Fernando Laramana of the Philippine Islands will speak at Bethany Congregational church’s 11 a.m. worship service.
Two federal tax liens and three releases of liens appear in the county recorder's office. Liens target Ralph C. and Mrs. Alix for 1943 income tax, Erwin P. Kenney for 1944 income tax. Releases cancel liens on Orville Hepner, Roy King, and Albert Benda for various 1944 taxes.
Five farmers were named officers of the Ely Cooperative Telephone association in its incorporation articles filed Saturday. Officers include J. Alfred Witousek as president and George Motycka as secretary and treasurer, with Frank J. Nemecek and Joe W. Holets as directors and Edward Matyk as director. Voting members will come from rural party lines in College and Putnam townships, Linn county, and Big Grove and Jefferson townships, Johnson county.
Walter R. Henderson files a 25000 damage suit against Benjamin Johnson and two Chicago trustees of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. He says his leg was amputated after an Aug 29 accident while transferring sacks of sea coal from a box car to a truck. he claims the train struck both him and the truck. Johnson is named as the train's engineer. the truck was owned by Universal Foundry Company, Henderson's employer.
Faul Bernard Hart 21 Belle Plaine faces larceny charges after allegedly stealing two wrist watches and two men’s rings from a Norva hotel room Friday. Hart, living in a Cedar Rapids hotel, claimed two and a half years Army service including Europe. Bond set at 3000. he is due in court next Wednesday. Jewelry valued at 189 belonged to Melvin and Leo Bina. Also reported Friday, $265 in cash vanished from Wesley Frank’s billfold left at a Cedar Rapids store.
Ralph Swallom, 24, was serving a nine month county jail term on a bad check charge when Friday a suspended indeterminate term not to exceed ten years was imposed in the state penitentiary after his guilty plea to a second check. Judge G K Thompson suspended the sentence during good behavior. The first term was levied May 3. The second check for 36 dollars was drawn on Palo Savings bank and signed Fred Morris.
Alice I. Wolfe of Cedar Rapids filed for a separate maintenance decree from Gerald E. Wolfe whom she married July 12 1924 in Marion. They have seven children and she seeks custody of the children.
Katherine Fiala filed for divorce from J H Fiala on May 29 and the case was dismissed Saturday at the plaintiff's request. Mary C. Snouffer of 1613 Avenue NE filed suit Friday against Elmer G. Listerberger of Cedar Rapids seeking $340 for allegedly overdue rent on ground floor premises at 128 First Street NE rented July 1 for $80 monthly.
DES MOINES AP Units of the Fifth Red Diamond infantry division will join two Iowa Centennial parades on June 29 and July 3. Bert Stolpe, Centennial chairman, said the Fifth division men would be headquartered here and noted the Italian field artillery battery and provisional reconnaissance platoon with armored cars, plus the division band, would take part.
Australia agreed to pay 27 million dollars to the United States to settle its lend-lease account, government sources said. The payment concluded negotiations reached Friday night, resolving the wartime program financials between the two nations.

Assistant State Attorney General Dan Duke said the revived Ku Klux Klan flogged a 21 year old Negro Navy veteran, a hotel worker, at gunpoint near Atlanta Feb 13. Nine men whipped him 52 times at a desolate spot near the municipal airport before he was driven away and walked to a police precinct.
Des Moines reports the Iowa will receive the silver service set once overhaul begins after entering Puget Sound on June 15 for three months. Capt Entwistle advised Gov Blue that the set, once used on a prior Iowa, will be installed during the overhaul.
Four people were fined in police court Saturday morning for disturbances Friday night. Gerald W. Carley of Des Moines and Ephram E. Berry were arrested at 10 07 p m for manhandling two girls near the Montrose hotel. both paid 25 dollars and costs for drunkenness and disturbing the peace. George Hillmer paid 25 dollars and costs for drunkenness and disturbing the peace after a 2 45 a m disturbance. Loretta Wolf paid 25 dollars after Tom Siamis filed an information alleging disturbance at the Taft Grill.
President Truman nominated John W. Gibson of Michigan David A Morse of New Jersey and Philip Hannah of Ohio as assistant secretaries of labor in a Friday announcement from Washington.
The District Court in Cedar Rapids Iowa will hold a probate hearing on June 10 at 9:00 a.m. to examine the last will and testament of Ernest R Newcomer late of Linn County. The court announces that the instrument has been admitted to probate and will be published for interested parties.
The estate of Elmer in Linn County Iowa is administered by Kenneth L Moon as administrator. All persons indebted must pay immediately and those with claims must present them duly authenticated. The notice is dated the 24th day of July and is issued by the administrator.
