Taxpayers oppose Marion street improvements meeting

Nearly 200 taxpayers gathered with Mayor John H. Pazour city council members and Engineer Ralph Gearhart in the Legion hall to oppose or scrutinize Marion’s proposed street work. Pazour said no taxes have funded street improvements in seven years and the city spends only 400 dollars yearly to maintain streets, noting a 13 thousand dollar drop in spending since 1931. Objectors pressed for caution and questioned the council’s ability to protect taxpayer interests.

Pressure to Remove Grain Pegs Gains Steam in Chicago

Pressure on Board of Trade officials to remove minimum grain pegs intensified as grain handlers warned of severe impact on movement of the new wheat crop. Margin requirements on oats rye and soybeans were hiked by the clearing corporation, signaling a possible step toward eliminating price limits. The shift aims to lure speculative buyers, aiding hedging of free wheat, with government loan programs seen as a cushion against losses. Margin increases followed, setting initial margins at six cents for oats and fifteen cents for rye and soybeans.
