Stump and Balderston win Linn GOP supervisor bids

In Linn County Republican primary voters chose Craig Stump and Karen Balderston for supervisor, defeating incumbents James Houser and Lu Barron. Stump led with 2,101 votes to Balderston’s 2,087. Nieland 1,735. Abel 293. Balderston led early but fell short at the end. Stump touted a positive change and community cooperation as the race moved toward the November election.

Simpson wins chance to run against Leach

Bob Simpson, longtime Iowa City Democrat, won the Eastern Iowa 1st District primary with 5,784 votes to Greg Guy’s 3,143. In Linn and Johnson counties he led 60 percent to 38 percent and 3,268 to 1,291. He now faces Rep. Jim Leach in November as he vows an aggressive campaign with up to 12 debates and possible empty chair talks if Leach misses.

Worley proposes $5 million expansion in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids based Worley Warehousing plans a $5 million 250000 square foot expansion off Bowl ing Street on 49th Avenue Drive SW adding 30 new jobs. The family owned firm will spend $225000 on machinery to handle Quaker Oats products and act as a mixing center for other clients including General Mills Procter & Gamble and Ralston Foods. The project aims to support Quaker Oats growth and enhance distribution nationwide.

Teens cut risky behavior overall but Latino youths rise

A Urban Institute study for Health and Human Services finds teenagers overall abstain from all 10 listed risk behaviors more now than a decade ago. Yet Latino teens show a sharp rise in five or more risks, increasing nearly 50 percent from 1991 to 1997, with 28 percent engaging in multiple risks.
