Balloons Hit Power Lines Killing Two in Separate Crashes
Three hot air balloons struck power lines in Maryland and North Carolina. In Gaithersburg Montgomery County an apparently fatal collision killed a 16 year old girl Christine Lynn Van Newkirk and left her father Robert Van Newkirk seriously burned. The 50 balloon fundraiser for Kids Inc. involved a Pittsburgh couple among the victims. In Charlotte a newlywed was killed when a balloon tangled in 13 000 volt lines. the pilot suffered burns and the wife was unharmed.

A Dubuque County accident report wrongly stated that 22 year old David Swigarth died in a May 26 two car crash. He survived with minor injuries after Sheriff Leo Kennedy corrected the miscode and a Dyersville paper apologized in the Telegraph Herald.
