Power lines fell, a 600 foot pier collapsed, and widespread damage occurred across Tidewater Virginia amid 98 mph winds.
Colton announced plans for a second two year term as safety commissioner and said a new police chief will be chosen before the November election. He will not delay the selection despite ongoing controversy over the previous chief’s firing and expects a 10 person qualified applicants list from the civil service commission after last week’s testing.
Radio Uganda announced Amin had arrived in an unidentified Arab country on the first leg of a trip toward Britain for a Commonwealth conference. The broadcaster said he would sail from France, West Germany, or Ireland to Britain and then drive to London for a triumphal entry, with further reports confirming the journey as of now unclear.
Singer Anita Bryant voted in Miami Beach on a countywide referendum to repeal a gay rights ordinance. Bryant had called for repeal and left the voting booth after casting her ballot.
