Tony Lema edged Nicklaus to win the tournament at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club. Lema became the first two time winner on the 7,280 yard course and collected $20,000 plus a new car each year for five years. Nicklaus finished with a seven on the final hole as Lema parred out.
Professional golfers Jack Rule and Steve Spray of Iowa tied for second place, each earning $587, after Tony Lema won the Buick Open. Spray led after round one with 68 but finished with rounds of 73 78 and 74, marking his first pro tournament money.
Lema pockets the $20,000 first prize at the Buick Open after an eight under par 280. Masters champion Jack Nicklaus closes to within one stroke on the 17th hole before bad luck influences the final outcome.
Norm Galpin of Altoona wins the 15 lap feature at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids area as 22 cars compete in the first Eastern Iowa appearance of super modifieds. He also posts fastest time trial and second in a heat to earn 340 dollars. Dennis Smith of Cedar Rapids finished third with a 115 in the Ottumwa Amateur Golf tournament. Barry Meerdink of Muscatine won with 110, beating Clyde Feltes of Des Moines who shot 124. Championship flight winners included Meerdink and Feltes with other top finishers listed.
Marshalltown golfer John Liechty edged Max Hall of Boone in a playoff after both posted 107 for 27 holes. Liechty parred the decisive hole while Hall bogeyed three putts. Liechty failed to clinch in regulation by missing a one foot putt on the last hole.
Elmcrest defeated Cedar Rapids Country Club 1344 34 in Class B and 1144 34 in Class A at Elmcrest this Sunday. Don Isett shot 82 for CRCC medal and Don Healy 85 led the Elmcrest winners. multiple match results show Elmcrest dominant in both divisions with several 30s and 70s scores from listed players.
i State announced Monday it signed Steve Strauss an all American high school swimmer from Cedar Rapids Jefferson to a fall scholarship. Strauss won three state titles and set records in the 200 yard individual medley at 2 09 and 100 yard backstroke at 57 5. Coach Jack McGuire called him versatile and among the finest competitors in the state.
