Iowa official cites gambling law effects on families

Attorney General Robert Larson told about 110 constables JP’s and guests at the Montrose hotel that Iowa’s anti gambling statute, enacted last February, has reduced gambling and increased daily comforts. He warned all violators lose licenses for a year except marriage licenses, and delegates picked Des Moines for the 1952 convention site.

Richardson Quits As Security Unit Head On Health Grounds

Washington (INS) Seth W Richardson resigned as chairman of the Subversive Activities Control Board amid hearings on forcing the Communist party to register as a foreign agent. President Truman accepted the resignation with regret, citing health. Richardson expects months of incapacity after major surgery.

Kenridge Trailer Sale Set for June 20 in Cedar Rapids

Nineteen used house trailers at Kenridge Terrace in Cedar Rapids go on sale June 20 at 10 a.m. Priority goes to World War I and II veterans with proof of service. Trailers are in generally poor condition, sold as is, and require full payment by certified funds. Inspect weekdays through June 19 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 to 10 a.m. sale day. Purchasers must be present and removal must occur within 30 days.

Maytag Raises Prices on Washers Across Models

Newton based Maytag announces price increases by Roy A. Bradt with boosts from five to ten dollars on conventional washers and twenty dollars on automatics. President Fred Maytag cites a 40 percent profit drop in the first quarter despite higher sales in comments on the move.

Beardsley Names Tandy and 12 to State Posts

Des Moines Gov Beardsley reappoints Brig Gen Fred C Tandy as adjutant general with 6500 dollar salary. He acted last summer after Gen Grahl joined active service. The governor also named 12 others to various boards including basic science examiners chiropody nurse examiners and state printing. Five health board members were renewed for two years. About 15 more appointments remain including one to the State Conservation Commission.

R L Morehouse Faces Embezzlement Charge

Richard L. Morehouse, 32, of 823 Fourteenth Street SE, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of embezzlement by bailee. He waived to the grand jury and was released on $2000 bond. The warrant, issued after information signed by Elmer Karasek, alleged Morehouse converted over $20 from a suit club operation tied to the Morehouse Clothing Company, amid several complaints to the county attorney.
