United Fire Group announced plans to build a 10 story 50 000 square foot downtown office in Cedar Rapids. The project includes renovating the adjacent American Building at 101 Second St SE purchased January 2014 and demolishing a 1 story structure at 119 First Ave SE. The firm employs 625 locally and 1025 nationwide.
Kyle Orth drove up to 30 mph in reverse in a high performance BMW before accelerating toward two Cedar Rapids officers who fired when he ignored surrender orders. Sixty-eight days later, the 27 year old was charged with five counts including drunken driving and eluding. He was released on recognizance after a court appearance.

Eugenia Vavra of the Lifelong Links partnership at the Heritage Area Agency on Aging warns that the region will face a caregiver shortage as the aging population grows. The program serves seniors in Benton Cedar Iowa Johnson Jones Linn and Washington counties, supporting families and aging adults.
Coming up on June 13 and June 20 a series explores caregiver support and the stress of caring for loved ones. A new Eastern Iowa program connects caregivers to state resources and a statewide hotline handles thousands of calls monthly. The program offers home modifications and technology options to aid caregivers. There are 43.5 million U S caregivers nationwide and over 540000 in Iowa. On average a caregiver provides more than 24 hours per week.
