Streetscape work in New Bohemia advances after delays
New Bohemia in southeast Cedar Rapids sees wider sidewalks benches plant ers and new lighting along Third Street SE from Eighth to 14th avenues. Arch motifs and several business owners fell away amid disputes since 2006 with delays worsened by 2008 displacements. Jim Jacobmeyer notes most vocal critics have left and hopes completion by now.

The $3 million project will add 18 foot sidewalks in parts of New Bohemia Cedar Rapids, narrow two lane streets, retain on street parking, and improve lighting. Half the cost comes from the city with the rest via a property assessment plan to aid flood time redevelopment. The plan preserves most trees and key business facades and aims to boost foot traffic ahead of Labor Day arts festival.
