Des Moines authorities, aided by federal and local officers, investigated a failed Rock Island Rocket bombing after 99 sticks of dynamite in a suitcase were placed near a highway overpass. The fuse sparked but did not detonate as passengers aboard the Chicago bound train were unharmed.

Sheriff reports an 11 year old boy threatened a teacher at knifepoint in a rural north Scott County school. The incident occurred Wednesday and the student was suspended. Parents were asked to seek psychiatric care. The boy was angered over not being promoted to the next grade. The teacher talked him into surrendering the knife after more than 20 minutes.
A two car collision at the intersection of highways 414 and 71 Friday night left Ira Weppler 55 of near Lewis dead. Four youths were injured and hospitalized in Atlantic. Larry Otis Smith 16 of Wiota Guy Smith 15 of Brayton and Gary Bannick 14 were named among the injured.
