U S Girls Hike Across East Germany

Three American college girls on a Vienna exchange hitch hiked into West Berlin through East Germany, aided by transit visas from East German police. They rode freight trucks past the border and arrived in Berlin at 3 30 am, saying Americans often hitchhike there. The students, Susan Sloman, Joan Whitehead, and Mary Schultz, plan to return the same way.

Daughter Mary Schultz hitchhikes through East Germany to Berlin

Darrel Schultz, lumber company manager in Sacramento, recalls learning of his daughter Mary Schultz and two other American college girls hitchhiking through Communist controlled East Germany to reach Berlin. Mary, 21, has been in Europe since February and aims to return in July. She has mailed notes about new experiences and previously broke her ankle while skiing in the Alps.

After 85, Downey gifts flag to Hayward students

Lucy Downey, widow of Spanish American War veteran Bill Downey, donated her husband’s casket flag to Tyrell Junior High in Hayward. She told students the flag would inspire American youth and collapsed as they watched. She later died in a hospital near San Leandro and was to be buried beside her husband at Presidio Cemetery.
