Rex Conn reports on El Kabir Shrine’s third annual horse show at Hawkeye Downs with Big classes and strong entries. Over 400 horses from four states compete for 4,000 dollars in prizes as 20 more classes, including stake events, are set for today starting at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Daylight Saving Time. The night show drew about 2,500 spectators despite a shower, with top honors going to Julia the hackney pony and a wide array of harness, pony, and draft classes judged by Phil Parker.
In Cedar Rapids at the Elks Lodge Hickenlooper warned that history could swing toward freedom or slavery for future generations. He stressed moral leadership and warned of nuclear threats, urging US strength, selective aid, and a self help approach rather than charity. Delegates elected Ralph Bastian as president and selected Muscatine Chanters to represent Iowa at the national convention in Los Angeles.
Julian Carlton of 1016 Twelfth Avenue SE was arrested by Cedar Rapids police Saturday night on a reckless driving charge. Officers observed him driving east on Sixteenth Avenue SW in an erratic manner then turning south on Third Street SW to Nineteenth Avenue where he was stopped. He allegedly veered across the center line forcing oncoming cars to swerve to avoid collisions.
A. N. Greenberg, 53, of St. Paul, was injured fatally when the car he rode in ran off U.S. 65 near Hampton Iowa. He died about two hours later after the Saturday crash that occurred five miles south of the city.
Washington reports California Iowa and South Carolina will hold primaries this week with the West Coast state drawing late campaign push for senate and a house race featuring James Roosevelt as a contender. Cross filing could yield dual nominations making November victory a formality. South Carolina Democrats also vote for governor with debate over school segregation plans despite a Supreme Court ruling. Senator Burnet R. Maybank faces no opposition for a third nomination in South Carolina.
In Fort Worth Texas fifteen independent Baptist churches vow to sponsor all white parochial schools following a Supreme Court ruling banning racial segregation in public schools. Ministers say segregation is not the main issue, focusing on Bible teaching and the aim that children be adequately taught with emphasis on the Bible and racial separation.
Two young riders, Francis E. Baker a 24 year old from 1000 Sixth Street SE and William R. Spicer a 21 year old from 723 Eighth Avenue SE, suffered superficial skin abrasions after their motorcycle spilled on a curve along Westwood Drive NW near Belmont Park. They were taken to St Luke's hospital by a passing motorist.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen announced in Cleveland it will serve wage and working condition demands on U S railroads Monday for its 215 000 members The union covers brakemen switchmen conductors yardmasters and dining car stewards The major demand seeks 48 hours pay for 40 hours work for yard service employees who chose a five day week under the 1951 agreement and aims to correct pay inequities from those terms
City Briefs report a retirees group meeting at Bever park pavilion at 2 p.m. Friday with refreshments. Voters are urged to support Leo A. Hoegh for governor in the June 7 primaries. A Cedar Rapids Clean-up committee luncheon is set for noon Monday at the Roosevelt hotel. Daylight saving time begins June 6 for taverns and wholesalers. Linn County Democrats nominate Loren M. Hullinger Jr. for state representative. The Junior Chamber and related groups announce meetings in the Chamber of Commerce building.

William Bennett leads the program. YMCA Toastmasters will include Hall Koontz and others Tuesday at 5 45 pm. Cedar Rapids Retail Credit Association meets Monday night with dinner at 6 30 and a summer break. Odd Fellows to Ely plan depart Tuesday at 7 30 pm. Navy man Paul A. Carney returns from 25 day leave. stationed in French Morocco. Cedar Rapids Civil Defense Council meets Monday at 4 pm to discuss a June 14 drill. Cedar Rapids Stamp Club meets Monday at 8 pm with a cover hunt. W J Hansen of Los Angeles visits his mother two days last week. Elsner D Northrop accepted for study at Georgetown University Institute for Foreign Service Preparation.
Seoul AP report says six of eleven Marines aboard a Flying Boxcar were rescued after Friday crash twenty miles off southern Korea. Helicopters and crash boats hunted the five missing as the Marine Air Wing coordinated the search Saturday.

Mary Osterberg wife of Carl W. Osterberg and former Cedar Rapids resident who moved to Des Moines died Thursday. Services will be held at 1 30 p.m. Monday in Turner chapel Des Moines by Rev Cecil Morrow. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Cedar Rapids resident Fred LaVerne Lynn aged 30 years dies at home after a lingering illness. Funeral services set for 1 30 p m Monday in the Chapel of Memories conducted by Rev Ralph B Colton of Sinclair Memorial Church. Burial will be Cedar Memorial Cemetery.
