Watchful mother watches son in fatal Russian roulette incident
Wayne Walker, 17, was injured in a self-inflicted gunshot after declaring “Watch, I’ll show you how to play Russian roulette.” At St Luke’s hospital his mother, pale and tense, kept her gaze on him as medics prepared for transfer to University hospital Iowa City for emergency surgery to remove a .22 bullet from his head. Two friends and two women witnessed the event and the surrounding night in Des Moines. Wayne had taken a gun from his waistband after warning about danger and then fired, collapsing on the rug. The incident follows concerns about prowlers and gun handling at his home. He remained unconscious and in critical condition after surgery.
