World Food Need and Domestic Demand Keep Prices High
Gazette Farm Editor Rex Conn told Lions Club that world food needs and solid domestic demand will keep farm product prices above government support levels through the two year guarantee period. He said the guarantees do not affect current high price levels except for potatoes and wool. He projected a record winter wheat harvest with some wheat rushed to Europe amid global developments, and noted European calories per day vary widely with Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia near 2600 while many countries hover around 2000 and parts of Germany, Austria, Romania, and Italy reach only 1600. He argued for a long-term government policy including natural resource conservation and a broader farm program due to USDA budget cuts.
