Demand for Light Horses Seen in Iowa
In Des Moines, Cecil F. Rooks of the Iowa Horse and Mule Breeders Association says postwar needs will favor light saddle horses and ponies over tractors. Iowa plans 175 to 225 horse shows this year, with 2000 spectators per show last year, highlighting ongoing demand for work and pleasure horses. He notes cows less have replaced horsepower, cites farm labor limits, and cites a drop in state horse population from 720000 in 1940 to 581000 in 1945 as stabilization begins.

Iowa Sheep Raisers Face Rehabilitation Dilemma Over Europe Trade
Dewey Jontz of the Iowa State Sheep association says a 30 000 head request from the United States for breeding in Europe risks reducing high quality stock at home. He notes Europe needs to rebuild its depleted flocks while Iowa relies on lamb and mutton demand. The association sold 516 registered rams and ewes for 28290 dollars, shipping to ten states to upgrade local flocks.

Iowa Crops Need Warm Sunny Days
Iowa crop and livestock data show wide variation across the state last week. Some farmers found no field work, others had several good days. 10 to 12 percent of corn may need replanting, especially in the southern third. Winter wheat heads up western Iowa but prospects worsen with excess water and low soil temperatures. Oats progress slowly, pastures need heat, and various pests are reported as not yet serious. Livestock buying rose in May with cattle up about 50 percent and sheep and lambs up about 35 percent from May 1944, while clipping on farms nears completion.
