Roosevelt Not Acting in Arms Strikes at Present
President Roosevelt said he would consider new steps to reduce labor stoppages in defense industries but would not act now while the defense mediation board handles disputes on the West Coast. He avoided committing to action over the Inglewood North American Aviation strike and the International Woodworkers union walkout, noting that more could be decided later. He referenced a formal letter from Daniel J. Tobin endorsing his national emergency address and urged newspapers to publish it. Meanwhile the mediation board presented a new contract for the southern coal industry with a $7 daily wage and 10 days paid vacation, to be accepted or rejected by 6 p.m. Monday, as 12,000 miners remained on strike.
