Louis Schmeling Fight Contingent on Braddock Victory
Joe Louis agrees to meet Max Schmeling for the world heavyweight title early in September in the United States if Louis defeats Jim Braddock in Chicago on June 22. A letter signed by Louis and manager Julian Black prompted Schmeling’s promoter Mike Jacobs to relay the proposal. The plan envisions a fifteen round title bout in America with a 50 50 purse split, to be staged in New York if Louis wins the Chicago bout. Schmeling sails for Germany but stays ready to return once needed.

Braddock camp cool on Louis Schmeling talks
Joe Gould Chamson Braddock manager dismissed the Louis Schmeling world title plan as contingent on Louis beating Braddock. Gould said a September bout against Schmeling would be logical only if Louis defeats Braddock, and that promoter Mike Jacobs controls the heavyweight path, not Louis.
