The St Ludmila church festival in Cedar Rapids unveils a new 9 million dollar community center bakery with multiple ovens a rounder and proofer capable of baking 120 dozen kolaches in 15 minutes. Volunteers plan to produce 120000 kolaches for this year’s festival and rent the space for events.
The University of Iowa considers Gilmore Hall modernization costing 30 to 40 million with 8 million in deferred maintenance relief, and Pappajohn upgrades at 15 to 20 million. Funding would mix private gifts, college revenue, and reserves, with 8 million from the UI general fund. Plans foresee separating bids for Gilmore and Pappajohn to improve scheduling while preserving historic UI heritage.
Iowa City plans to convert the empty 21 S Linn St lot into a mixed use development after months of public input. The city will issue a request for proposals by August with proposals reviewed through 2024 and a 2025 company selection, with construction to follow over several years.
