Life sentence for woman who confined teen for hours
Mary Jane Jackson Thomas, 47, was sentenced in Linn County to life without parole after a jury found her guilty of first degree kidnapping second degree kidnapping and multiple counts of willful injury for holding beating and confining a 15 year old girl in 2019 The victim now 17 testified to hours of abuse and confinement in a bathroom while being struck with a hammer and extension cord Administrators argued for a harsh sentence noting the abuse was deliberate and abhorrent and that the defendant showed no remorse with a videotaped interview and pre sentence report outlining cultural explanations rejected by the judge

Court rules no phone attorney consultations before charges
Iowa Supreme Court ruled that the constitutional right to an attorney does not extend to confidential telephone conversations before charges. In a drunken driving case, police could record a phone call to counsel. the majority said the call must be in the presence of the arrestee’s custody. Justice Appel dissented, noting possible rights to confidential counsel and citing other states with protective rules.
