Scientists Find 24 New Species in Suriname Plateau
A 2005 expedition led by Conservation International found two dozen new species in eastern Suriname near Paramaribo. Findings include an atelopus frog with purple markings, six fish types, 12 dung beetle species, and a unique ant. Researchers urged stronger conservation in unprotected state lands amid mining interests by Suriname Aluminum and BHP Billiton.
