Baker chosen as next Cedar Rapids police chief

Public Safety Commissioner Floyd Bergen announced Raymond K. Baker 49 an assistant chief would be recommended to the City Council to fill the vacancy left by Chief Gareth Clift with Baker to be sworn in June 29 if approved by the council Baker led the four candidates in test scores with James Barnes Wallace Johnson and William Byrne following Bergen said the process included assessments and interviews and noted Baker’s administrative ability communication with the safety office and rapport with the City Council Baker declined comment until the council votes and Baker was born in Fairfield

Tornadoes strike Tama County causing farm damage near Gladbrook

Four tornadoes touched down in northeastern Tama County around 7 15 p m with extensive damage east of Gladbrook. The Gus Wrage farm near Gladbrook suffered the collapse of a house and loss of outbuildings while other farms reported damaged homes and destroyed structures. Two minor injuries reported and up to 600 customers lost power in Garwin as crews aided by rescue units and Red Cross teams responded.
