Winthrop Creamery Closes After 48 Years of Operation

The Winthrop Creamery, run by J. C. Guthrie for 48 years, shut down last Wednesday as shift from home separated cream to whole milk cut volumes. Once the state’s largest individually owned creamery, peak output was 665000 pounds of butter in 1946. The plant began in the 1880s, became a cooperative in 1889, and changed hands several times before Guthrie’s closure. Remaining staff included buttermaker Louis McEnany, plant worker Clayton Fliss, cream haulers Ted McGraw and John Higgins, and bookkeeper Mrs Don Powell.

Time To Begin Side-Dressing For Corn In Iowa

Iowa State extension agronomist Regis Voss urges farmers to apply nitrogen side-dress before corn reaches 12 to 18 inches. Early application supports peak growth, minimizes root pruning, and benefits from subsequent rain. Three forms liquid solid and gas are equally effective for yields, with risks if delayed due to wet weather and rapid crop growth.

Rural housing push eyed at 50 000 units yearly

A Johnson administration official said existing legislation could back a program to aid construction of 50,000 new rural homes per year, creating about 2.5 million rural residents with improved housing over the next decade. The Farmers Home Administration would need $500 million annually to sustain about 40,000 man-years of site work, with expanded credits and rental housing support for low income rural families of all ages.
