Supreme Court rules against prosecutions for warrantless inspections

The Supreme Court, in a 6 to 3 decision, barred prosecutions of householders who refuse to admit municipal health, welfare and safety inspectors without a warrant, applying the Fourth Amendment to business owners as well. Dissenters led by Justice Clark decry the ruling, warning of chaos in health and safety enforcement and urging adherence to probable cause standards. The court also postponed construction guidance on a major Snake River dam licensing issue and set next-term argument on a communist party ban affecting defense plant employment.
