Pacific Missile Failure Highlights Safety Assurance
Scientists at Johnstone Island showed a warhead can be separated from a Thor missile at high altitude without a nuclear explosion. The Thor was destroyed after a tracking-system failure, with fragments landing in 720 feet of water within the testing zone. Officials said no hazardous radioactivity or threat to life is expected, though small fragments might reach the troposphere or even the stratosphere, potentially circling Earth over years.
