Auto Increase 73 Percent In Eight Years
Detroit reports a 73 percent rise in passenger car registrations from 28,100,188 in 1946 to 48,498,870 last year. Truck registrations grew from 5,725,692 in 1946 to 9,842,647 by year end. Scrappage runs over three million annually, with net additions about two million. If trends continue, 85 million autos could be on U.S. highways by 1965, risking congestion without faster highway improvements.
