The Cedar Rapids school board voted late Monday to run Grant Wood and Buchanan as two separate six grade buildings next fall with complete, separate staffs. Plan 3 keeps divisions along Vernon drive and Woodland Park Terrace with Johnson to Grant Wood and others to Buchanan and the Johnson district, while cafeteria and multi purpose room improvements at Buchanan were approved. A Grant Wood opening this fall is unlikely though a Childs and Smith architect said the building looks generally good aside from plumbing delays. Lockers may arrive by September if a high-priority defense order is obtained.

Cedar Rapids board of education set July 2 for opening bids on an estimated 350000 addition to Garfield school. A public hearing is planned for July, with bids for 50,000 in rewiring work on stage and auditorium lighting across four high schools.

Ed ward A Horak acting for his son Larry won a 110 judgment against Stanley Kuta Electric Co and Milo Heral for injuries to Larry Horak. The 1950 incident saw the boy lose the last joints of his left hand when his fingers were caught in a motor being repaired on the Horak farm. The petition sought 650. The defendants accepted the 110 offer and the judgment was enrolled.
Dorothy L Blahnik files a new suit against John Pifer for 2750 dollars claiming she paid for a house at 1365 Twentieth Avenue SW bought December 4 1946 with Pifer. She seeks an accounting of house expenditures and states Pifer remains in possession.
Giles Kelly, 51, of 702 L Street SW, was fined 200 by Judge William Matias after a May 16 arrest following a chase that began at Mt. Vernon Road and 20th Street SE and ended on Bever Avenue and 25th Street SE. He filed an appeal to the district court. An appeal bond was set at 200. Officer John Stodola testified Kelly was slumped at the wheel and dragged the officer about 50 feet when he suddenly moved the car.
Mr and Mrs Ray Benson will lead church services at 7 30 tonight at the Sunshine Mission. Other items note polio insurance and local advertisements for yard sales and financial help through Gazette classifieds.
The supreme court on Tuesday affirmed the Oct 20 1949 jury verdict awarding Charles C Murray 4861.72 for personal injuries from a Cedar Rapids City Lines bus strike that blinded his eye. The suit was filed Nov 8 1946 and tried before Judge M C Hamiel.
The county court dismissed a second offense drunk driving case against the late Charles A. Chehak on the state's motion. Chehak died May 13. A $1,000 appearance bond posted by Chehak was released by court order.
On Tuesday Edgar Wright filed suit against Charles M. Hubbell seeking 250 dollars for alleged damage to his car in an April 20 accident. L B Salisbury of Los Angeles sued Francis W. Lyman for 112.36 dollars claimed as due on account.
On Monday the plaintiffs dismissed two suits. Ethel B. Hart trading as Century Cab Company sued C. A. Fox trading as Fox Garage for damage. In a separate action Mary E. Bisdorf sued James P. Bisdorf for separate maintenance.
Harold R. Barton filed the account suit against Verne Rutger on May 10. Judge Floyd Philbrick ordered the case transferred to Johnson county district court on Monday.
Phoebe B Hubbell Monday awarded a judgment of 108.36 against Louise H Maresh in an account suit.
Virgil Dugan a 32 year old of 303 Eighth avenue SE had his five year suspended sentence revoked by District Judge Floyd Philbrick on Tuesday. Dugan an employee of Jim Reed Floor Cleaning Company was arrested after being accused of taking eighty dollars from a desk at Kinderknecht General Contracting Company 113 F avenue NW while cleaning the office Saturday afternoon. He had originally drawn the five year suspended term in 1949 after a prior arrest for taking forty dollars from another office he was cleaning.

Howard Hill, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, said price controls are unrealistic and attack the symptoms of inflation. He rejected claims that farmers are getting rich despite beef prices at 150 percent of parity and urged understanding of farming economics at the bureau’s mid-summer conference in Des Moines.
Parks commissioner Richard C. Jones was listed in fairly good condition Tuesday at St. Luke's hospital Cedar Rapids after abdominal surgery on Monday. Mrs. Jones asked that flowers be sent to Red Cross Cedar Rapids Community Chest or United Service Aids for servicemen.
Admiral Alberto da Zara, 62, former commander of Italian naval forces in World War II, died Monday night in Foggia Italy. Earlier commanded during the Battle of Pantelleria.
Mike J Skerik 61 retired Cedar Rapids fireman died Monday in the Veterans hospital Long Beach California. He served in the navy 1907 1911 and two years in World War II. Funeral services set for 11 a.m. Thursday in Gardena California. Survivors include wife and son Mike R marked by Cedar Rapids three daughters and several relatives.
Ward Burks Jr. 34 of 6230 avenue NW died at home at 1:25 a.m. Tuesday after a two month illness Born April 30 1917 in Rock Island he lived in Cedar Rapids about 30 years Survivors include wife Lulu Belle two daughters Bertha Mae and Laura Evelyn parents six sisters and one brother Services at 10 a.m. Thursday in Beatty chapel conducted by Rev Milton White Burial in Cedar Memorial cemetery Friends may call at the chapel
Five day old James Esplen Hoag the son of Mr and Mrs James R Hoag of 1600 Sixth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital at 10 am Monday He is survived by his parents and grandfather John E Hoag of Toddville Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 30 pm at Cedar Memorial Cemetery conducted by Rev H G Schwegler from Beatty Chapel to the cemetery
Committal services for John E. Lapes, pioneer Cedar Rapids florist, who died February 2, will be held at St. John’s Hellenic Cemetery. The service is conducted by Rev. George Hadjis, pastor of St. John the Baptist Hellenic Orthodox Church, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services for Mrs Emma Cuhel aged 2515 J street SW are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Barta Hesser chapel conducted by Rev Ludvik Burian and Rev Francis Pokorny. Burial will follow at Anderson cemetery. A daughter Mrs Emma Stepanek died in 1940.

Two of four prisoners escaped from state reformatory farm No. 3 Monday and were captured near Monticello about 4 am Tuesday. The escapees include Richard Aspedon 19 serving 5 years for larceny from Sidney Iowa James T Miller 23 a ten year sentence from Marion county for forgery and Alvin Charles Seifert 23 a ten year forgery convict from Cerro.

Dale Johnson age 20 and Seifert were captured by Monticello Night Marshal Sam Clark and William Null while hitchhiking. They wore stolen jackets and dungarees. St John Hellenic Orthodox Church purchases a 400 lot section of Linwood cemetery to be designated as its cemetery. The cemetery will be run by a separate corporation but closely allied to the church with five trustees elected by the church. The board includes Mike Bellas as president and five members with terms ranging from one to four years. Articles of incorporation are to be filed soon. The first burial will be John E. Lapes, a Cedar Rapids florist and church member, who died February 2. burial planned for Wednesday.
Clarence O. Johnson a Iowa Liquor Control Investigator visited Cedar Rapids Tuesday over a $400 cash shortage at the east side state owned store. He joined auditor Harry O. Brownlie whose check confirmed the shortage first reported Memorial Day by Ralph Hartwig store manager. The loss dated May 28 and is the Cedar Rapids store’s first such incident.
