Barack Obama secured the Democratic nomination with AP counting him at 2,144 delegates, surpassing the 2,118 needed for Denver. Hillary Clinton pursued the vice presidential path, signaling ongoing campaign dynamics as Obama faces John McCain in the general election.
Sen. Barack Obama thanks Americans who stood with him through the campaign, citing Cedar Rapids snows and Sioux Falls sunshine during his St. Paul, Minnesota address amid developing results. Clinton wins South Dakota and declines to concede as McCain attacks Obama over Iraq. Harkin may endorse today.
A Georgia family mourns after three year old Sydney Blanton, of Thomasville, died from injuries from a plane crash on Highway 1 in Iowa City. Her mother Christina Blanton and pilot Lewis Martin were injured and treated at University Hospitals. The NTSB arrived to investigate the cause.
Linn County Auditor Joel Miller defeated Lyle Hanson in the Democratic primary. All incumbent Democratic supervisors won in tight contests in new districts. Sheriff candidate Brian Gardner beat Bill Elam to face Republican David Zahn. GOP supervisors John Erceg Eric Rosenthal and Dave Machacek won in districts 2 3 and 5. Turnout reached 14 528 at 10.2 percent with 142 102 registered voters.
In Iowa City Johnson County voters backed incumbent Auditor Tom Slockett and supervisors Pat Harney Terence Neuzil and Rod Sullivan in the Democratic primaries. Slockett defeated Mona Shaw two to one after Shaw accused him of a hostile work environment.
