Solitary Sod House Photographer of Nebraska's Pioneers
Solomon Hatcher chronicled Nebraska life from 1884 to 1924, shooting nearly 4000 photos. He started in Virginia and Illinois, moved to Nebraska at 24, built a sod house, ran a mobile studio on a horse drawn wagon, and braved harsh trails and weather to photograph settlers. He supported his work by selling prints to pioneers.

Hard times and comeback of a Nebraska photographer
Hard times hit Butcher and his family as they lost the farm and a studio fire destroyed seven years of work including photographs and settlers biographies. He saved glass negatives, rebuilt, published a book of photos and biographies, opened a new studio, and produced postcards whileTrying other ventures. His late life legacy endures in the Nebraska State Historical Society and Library of Congress memory site.
