Rural Mt. Vernon farmer Dale Stoneking painted the side of a purebred Suffolk buck with NIXON during a family reunion political joke. A photographer arrived Friday to find the camera-shy animal resisting, prompting Stoneking and his 13-year-old grandson Mark Rodman to calm and steady the buck. The buck belongs to Stoneking's son Lyman. Stoneking also jokes about painting AGNEW on the other side.

Woman Rescued From Cedar River After Car Exit
Beulah Pusateri , 53, of 1306 K Avenue NE Cedar Rapids was pulled from the Cedar River near Ellis Park boat harbor and listed in fair condition at St Luke’s Hospital. The crash occurred about 10 30 p m when her station wagon left Ellis Boulevard NW and plunged into the river. A witness, Steve Stinger, described the car parking brief ly then sliding down the river bank and coming to rest upright in the water.

Rescue effort saves boy after traffic crash
Three witnesses lifted the front of a compact car and freed nine year-old Robert J. Hartl, a school crossing guard, from beneath. Hartl was in good condition at Mercy hospital with a fractured arm and multiple abrasions after a collision involving a car driven by Lisa Knockle and a station wagon driven by Ray L. Helt at a Center Point Road NE intersection.
