Little Change in Education Level of Farm Workers

A 1961 USDA survey shows about six of ten farm workers on U.S. farms had at most eight grades of schooling and only about one in seven completed high school. The average education level has not improved in 20 years, with higher schooling linked to higher daily earnings, steadier work, and more nonfarm opportunities. The South averaged seven years of schooling versus about nine outside the South.
