The House approved a 24 billion plan with test mandates and consequences for low achievement, while vouchers were dropped. Democrats, meanwhile, pressed for energy price caps to ease Californians’ crisis.
Several hundred protesters gathered in Cincinnati on a rainy Saturday to condemn police treatment of blacks and economic hardship. The march followed the April shooting of 19 year old Timothy Thomas by Officer Stephen Roach and the ensuing riots and curfew. Thomas is accused of traffic violations. Roach faces misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and obstructing official business. Thomas' mother urged unity and prayer to heal the city.
