New York traders pared earlier losses as the market inched higher late Wednesday. Volume hovered near 4 million shares with gains of key issues modest while more volatile names recovered 2 to 3 points. The list of quotations shows mixed moves across major corporations including Chrysler, General Electric, IBM, and Standard Oil, reflecting a tentative recovery after recent declines.
Estimated Thursday receipts in Chicago and Des Moines show hogs steady to 25 cents lower with 6,009 to 6,500 hogs and 700 to 700 plus sheep. Slaughter cattle offer steady to 25 lower with varied prime to good lots. heifers and bulls follow similar trends. Prices span multiple weight classes and regions, reflecting mixed demand for slaughter hogs and cattle.
A leaky gas stove caused a 5 10 p.m. explosion and fire at Everette Jones 637 Tenth Street SE. No one harmed though contents of the kitchen were destroyed and smoke and heat damaged much of the house. Jones lit the oven then left for a store. his wife was in the front room when the blast occurred. Firemen contained the blaze quickly.
Rosemary Nolan, 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Nolan, escaped serious injury when her car rolled into a ditch three miles north of Masonville Tuesday evening. She was pinned under the vehicle by soft mud but is in good condition in an Independence hospital with lacerations and bruises.

Prices Wednesday at C R MARKETS show a 25 cent drop. Bulk 200 to 1230 lb butchers sold 14.90 to 15.15, packing sows 13.25 to 13.75. Lower weights and weight grades incur deductions up to 75 cents per group.
Moderately active pressure pushed grain futures into general weakness in Chicago on Wednesday. Wheat and soybeans fell more than a cent, while corn held near unchanged and oats and rye declined modestly as traders cashed profits and short selling muted demand.
Chicago area commodity prices show no wheat sales. Corn No 1 Yellow at 1.294, No 2 Yellow at 1.29. Oats No 2 heavy white at 0.69. Soybeans No 1 Yellow at 2.54, Soybean oil at 8.40.
AP reports USDA live poultry prices unchanged with roasters at 24 to 26 cents and fryers up to 27 cents. Butter and eggs show steady wholesale levels with grade A whites at 28 cents and various standards. potatoes arrivals and shipments indicate light supplies but firm market with California round reds at 6.60 dollars and Idaho russets noted.
Eggs offerings are liberal with slow demand. Mixed colors and weights shown with standard price ranges. Whites show various grades from extra fancy to peewees, with prices around 14 to 31 cents. Butter is ample and demand steady with prices unchanged.

Mrs. K O Knudsen 71 of 1035 Thirtieth Street died Tuesday after a brief illness in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Born November 13 1892 near Mount Vernon she married M Knudsen March 19 1913. Survivors include her husband two sons Max and John four grandchildren. Services Friday at 2 pm in Murdoch chapel. Cedar Memorial burial. Viewing begins Wednesday after 7 pm.
Mrs. Carl McArthur 77 lifelong Linn county resident and Center Point member for 30 years died at home Tuesday. Born Della Rocher August 7 1886 in Palo she married Carl McArthur October 7 1904 in Palo. Survived by husband two sisters Mrs Guy Yates and Mrs Bertha Stookey. Services 2 p.m. Friday Murdoch chapel Center Point burial Palo Cemetery.
The Rev. David Waller of St. John's Lutheran Church found $60 missing from his office. Officials suspect the same burglars hit Lutheran and Methodist churches in Decorah Sunday night and churches in Oelwein earlier.

Des Moines Iowa state Comptroller Marvin Selden Jr said he is well pleased with the Iowa highway commission finances since a budget was instituted. Revenues rose to 84.805 million in the first nine months, with total expenditures below legislative limits for the year. Construction spending climbed 36 percent to 57.462 million, while inspection costs fell 15 percent due to policy of staff transfers and training.
