United Fire expects Q2 catastrophe losses near 35 million
United Fire & Casualty Co projects pretax catastrophe losses of about 30 to 35 million in the second quarter ending May. After-tax impact estimated at 0.75 to 0.87 per share. Losses include 7 to 9 million from Q1, 5 to 6 million from late April storms, and 15 to 20 million from the May Joplin tornado.

Iowa business leaders tempered their optimism about sales over the next six months in the Iowa Busi ness Council quarterly Economic Outlook Survey. The OSI stood at 65.3, with Sales OSI dropping from 75 to 69. Employment and Capital Spending OSIs edged up, and 95 percent of CEOs expect steady or higher sales.

USDA weekly Crop Report shows persistent rain stopping field work across much of south central Iowa and slowing remaining areas. As of Sunday 99 percent of corn planted with 90 percent emerged and 87 percent of soybeans planted with 52 percent emerged, well below five year averages.
