Blast traps 41 after deadly West German mine explosion

An underground explosion 300 feet deep at a Borken lignite mine killed 16 miners and trapped 41 with little chance of survival. Officials, including Hesse interior minister Gottfried Milde, cited a gas explosion from coal dust as the likely cause. About one third of the workers were foreigners, including 14 Turks, as rescue crews labored through debris with drills and fresh air injections. Families gathered at the surface in shock while authorities reviewed mine records to confirm the total at the time.
