Paraphernalia ordinance sparks Cedar Rapids petitions
Petitions with over 500 names opposing a local rule on smoking or snuff accessories were filed with the Cedar Rapids City Clerk. Public Safety Commissioner Floyd Bergen asked the city attorney to consider a drug paraphernalia ordinance, possibly with customer registration. PRIDE backs a restricting measure while Record Realm spokesman Steven Bray counters, arguing education over regulation and noting stores’ paraphernalia aren’t advertised and that home alcohol use also affects youth.

TV sewer repair plan hits Cedar Rapids costs and delays
Cedar Rapids faces a summer headache as a $30,000 diagnosis escalates to a $500,000 cure for aging sewers. Officials plan televised inspections of 33,000 feet of lines, identifying cracks, root intrusion and collapses on Wilson Avenue SW and I Avenue NW. Estimates total about $235,000 for the two main problem areas plus related street work. Bids due in two weeks, with the city financing through reallocations and a lift-station upgrade at $25,000, saving $10,000 yearly.
